On June 1, 2007, Langkawi Island has been given a World Geopark status by UNESCO.^[3] Three of its main conservation area in Langkawi Geopark;Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park.(Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). These three parks are the most popular tourism area within Langkawi Geopark.
The Langkawi Cable Car takes visitors up to the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the Langkawi Sky Bridge is located.

In August 2009 based on the tied agreements between official representatives from Iran and Malaysia, Langkawi and Kish Island (free zone in Persian Gulf) announced to be sisters.^[4]

Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 99 islands (an extra 5 temporary islands are revealed at low tide) in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thaiborder.  On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 45,000, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. The largest of these islands is called Langkawi Island and is bigger than the Penang Island.The other islands in this group are Island of Pregnant Maiden (Pulau Dayang Bunting), Lion Island (Pulau Singa Besar) and Beras Basah Island.  This island is unique in the sense that it has so many legendsand myths associated with it.  Langkawi Island is therefore also called Pulau Lagenda or Legendary Island.

The most talked about legend is that of Mahsuri who is said to have laid a curse on this island for seven generations. Luckily the period of this curse is over now and Langkawi Island is fast becoming an internationally recognised tourist destination.

 

The government of Malaysia has declared the entire Langkawi Island as a duty free zone. Hence this island is also termed Duty Free Island.All goods sold in this island are exempted from government tax.Therefore this Legendary Island is a haven for the shoppers.You only need to stay in Langkawi for a minimum of 48 hours to take back home a reasonable amount of tax free goods.

The villages of langkawi

Kampung (village) life in Langkawi is all about traditional ways, friendliness and warmth in a harmonious community. Perhaps not far at all to urban standards, but to the rural population of Langkawi the bustle of the town in Kuah is light years away from the peaceful, laid-back, and mellow atmosphere of the villages. Babies quietly doze in batik hammocks, whilst carpenters, fishermen and padi farmers go about their daily routine in a relaxed manner. Pretty wooden houses line the paths along most villages and the visitor will find the unhurried attitude of the villagers a relief from the dizzying crowds of a city. Take in the picturesque scenes of life in a village, or take a stroll around the rubber plantations. Watch the buffaloes splash in the muddy wallows of the padi fields, oblivious to the toiling of the farmers. Elsewhere you may still be able to observe the daily routine of fishermen mending their nets or preparing to set out to sea. These quaint kampungs give an insight of the life that most of us have relegated to the back of our memories. Memories, but they are indeed real in rural Langkawi. If your Malaysian roots are founded on the fertile soil of such places, the rural heartland of Langkawi will give you a chance to make a re-visit.As for towns, there is only one, which is Kuah. Pulau Tuba is a strikingly beautiful island which is 5km south of Langkawi Island. It is one of the only two inhabited islands of Langkawi archipelago. Tuba Island owes it name to tuba roots, which are abundantly found on the island. In geographical terms, Pulau Tuba is a mountainous island with very little plains. It boasts of picturesque beaches and serene locale. Its mesmerizing beauty is granted by the cool white waves, amazingly vast expanse of azure waters and lush green tropical rainforests.

Besides all other things, Tuba Island is a natural habitat of numerous fascinating wild creatures. So, this makes it an ideal place for bird-watching and jungle-trekking. It's moreover great to go for hiking through dense forests and get the glimpse of some elusive creatures and perceive the flora and fauna. This quaint island is utilized by travelers to relax and enjoy the beautiful tropical vistas. Also, if you wish, you can take on long clam walks along the sandy beaches while enjoying the quietude of lapping waves and bird calls.

On seeing the horizon, you would see lovely small islands which are covered with wild vegetation stretching all the way to Thailand. Since the island is fairly undeveloped, there are very few options of accommodation such as a resort and a few home stay programmes. It is address to numerous groups of traditional fishermen who offer home stays organized by the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia. It's good to try out these staying options, as they will give you the opportunity to personally experience the lifestyle of the dwellers.

Apart from fishing, the fishermen do a little farming, rear animals and mend their orchards. Home stay programmes give them an extra income. The Pulau Tuba has a rich growth of medicinal herbs and shrubs, which are garnered by the fisher folks. In addition, wax and honey are habitually collected and sold by the fishermen to complement their family income. The women on the island are also skilled in making mats and other handicraft items. To put in short terms, Tuba Island is an enlightening and soothing place to visit in Langkawi.

PULAU TUBA
	A mountainous island with very little lowland, the island of Pulau Tuba, about five kilometres south of Langkawi island, is the natural habitat for an interesting selection of wildlife. Undeveloped and undisturbed, with barely enough space for the dirt track that surrounds the island, it's a good place to see wildlife, up close and personal. Go hiking or bird-watching, or find a deserted beach or two to get a glimpse of some elusive creatures. Check with your hotel for information on trails to follow. Getting There Hire a small speedboat. Around Rm6 each way. Costs vary with the numbers and size of the boat. Staying There Pulau Tuba is the only other island that offers accommodation but visitors should note there is only one place to stay - the Sunrise Beach Resort.
	PULAU SINGA BESAR (Singha Island)
	Nature-lovers must not miss Pulau Singa Besar, which contains a wildlife sanctuary located three kilometres off the southern tip of Pantai Tengah. It is a designated stop for the island-hopping boat. Getting There If you join an organised one-day trip, you'll get the services of a guide who will explain about the flora and fauna on the island. Many species of animals have been released on the island. If you're lucky you may be able to catch a glimpse of monkeys, mouse deer, various reptiles and birds - possibly peacock displays. Staying There There is no accommodation.
	PULAU BUMBON
	Ten minutes from the Kuah jetty, Pulau Bumbon offers pleasant beaches. You can get there by booking a day trip. A quiet and deserted island.
